ALP ORIENTAL *CROCHETED* YOGA MAT BAG 

You didn’t think we’d forget about our crochet customers this week, did you!? Our number three free single skein pattern this week is the Alp Oriental Crocheted Yoga Mat Bag.

In Monday’s entryI spoke about Alp Orientals fibre content and texture. Today let’s talk more crochet!

Several months back we were lucky enough to meet with the Crochet Liberation Front to show them some our yarns and get feedback on how they worked for crocheted objects. About Alp Oriental they said-

ALP ORIENTAL CROCHETED YOGA MAT BAG                                                                              pattern written and designed by Kt Baldassaro

SIZE– 21.5”L x 6.5”W (laid flat measurement)

MATERIALS                                                                                                                                      1 ball Alp Oriental by Feza Yarns (165 yds; 325g)                                                                               US N (10.00 mm) crochet hook                                                                                           tapestry needle                                                                                                                           locking stitch marker                                                                                                                        5/8ths wide colour appropriate ribbon cut to 2/3rds  of a yard length

GAUGE– 8 sc & 8 rows = 4”

BAG
Using US N crochet hook, OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE, CH 3. Join to work in
the round.
Rnd 1- Work 6 sc stitches into the centre of the ring; Pull tail of yarn to close ring. PM to
indicate beginning of the rnd.
Rnd 2- 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sts)
Rnd 3- *1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (18 sts)
Rnd 4- *1 sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Rnd 5- *1 sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * around. (30 sts)
Rnd 6- 1 sc in each sc around. Place another marker to indicate the end of this rnd, and
leave it here.
Repeat Rnd 6 until piece measures approx. 20” from initial occurrence of Rnd 6. Cut
yarn and fasten off. LEAVE MARKER.
STRAP
Using US N crochet hook, OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE, CH 36.
Rnd 1- 1 sc in each st to end of row.
Work Rnd 1 four times total. Cut yarn and fasten off.
FINISHING
Using a tapestry needle, attach one end of the vertical edge of the strap to the top of
the bag so that the PM left is centred between the four rows. Attach the other vertical edge
of the strap to the bottom of the bag, approx. 2 rows above the first occurrence of Rnd 6,
and making sure that the PM left there is also centred between the four rows of that edge.
Weave in all loose ends.
Fold the 5/8th ribbon in half along its horizontal plane. Starting at the stitch directly
below the top of the strap (open end of the bag), weave the ribbon under the first sc, and
over the second sc. Continue in this way until the ribbon has been woven around the entire
top of the open end of the bag and is back at stitch directly below the top strap. Tighten and tie into a bow to secure the yoga mat inside the bag.
